What is forestry mulching?

A forestry mulcher is a tracked machine with a spinning drum of carbide teeth that shreds standing brush and trees into mulch on the spot. It cuts, grinds and spreads in one pass, so there is nothing to haul and nothing to burn.

Around Knoxville it is especially effective against Chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, multiflora rose, autumn olive and the sapling thickets that take over abandoned fields and woodland edges.

Why it works well on East Tennessee land

  • Erosion control. The mulch layer protects bare clay on slopes from washing out.
  • No burning needed. Knox County tightly limits open burning (stumps and construction debris can't be burned), so mulching on site is often the simplest option.
  • Tracked machines can work moderate slopes that wheeled equipment can't.
  • Selective. Operators can leave the oaks, hickories and poplars you want.

Limits to know about

Mulching leaves stumps and roots in the ground, so it is not enough by itself for a foundation or driveway. Very steep slopes may need hand crews. For a building site, ask about full lot clearing for the footprint and mulching for the rest.

Questions about forestry mulching

Will privet and honeysuckle grow back after mulching?

They often resprout from roots. Many owners do a follow-up mowing or spot herbicide treatment the next season to keep invasives under control.

Can mulching be done on steep land?

Tracked mulchers handle moderate slopes. Very steep or rocky areas may require smaller machines or hand crews. Your contractor will assess it.
